Pyrometer readings with infared gun

Just finished checking my exhaust temps with a fluke infared gun.
My goal was to compare the results to my autometer pyrometer.
Here are the results, after a good hard run and monitoring the temps as they dropped the Fluke was consistantly 100 to 75* cooler, After 10 min. the temps stabilized. Here are the results.
Idle @ 800 RPMs Fluke meter 250*
Idle @ 800 RPMs Autometer Gauge 325*

Just curious, will reading temps @ the manifold where the thremocouple is located with an infared gun be an accurate comparison? I am not sure I trust the Auometer Gauge?

What are you guys seeing @ idle? In park

Cruiseing Hwy @ 65 MPH my temp is 1000* with bed empty. That seams high............ See signature for mods.
Thanks in advance.

The idle differences don't surprise me much, as there will be some heat loss through the cast iron housing, BUT your cruise temps seem waaay off. There has been some talk about Autometer probes being faulty, but I seem to remember the symptoms being of the slow reacting type.

If your's is anything like mine, the gauge will shift 200 degrees when you tap on the side of it...

I think the diffrence is because the probe is reading directly in the exhaust gas stream while the Fluke IR is reading the surface and is also being cooled by it's mass and the radiator airstream.

I also noticed a difference in readings between my Banks pyro and now my AutoMeter pyro.

I would love to see the signature of our engine using an FLIR Thermal Imaging Camera.

BTW Which model Fluke do you have? I have the Fluke 561 HVACPro

Jim nailed it. I believe around 325 is what we would expect to see on a stable warm idle, so looks like the Autometer cannot be too far off. I have my doubts about them though, as well. Truck sat for about two weeks last month and the pyro literally went crazy for the first 10 minutes after firing it up again. Pegged, jumped around, pegged again, went dead, jumped around, pegged, constantly for ten minutes before it settled down and appeared to operate properly again. Anyone seen anything like that before?

Your 65 MPH cruise temps seem really high. My truck is more overfueled then yours and I'm only at 700* running about 70-75 on the freeway. I recently pulled about 4500 lbs from sac to fremont and even pulling 65 over the altamont pass on O/D the highest I could get the pyro was 1000* using about 12-15 lbs of boost.

My truck will get down to 300* at idle.
