People don't give the 727 any credit.. I love mine and I am glad its not a 518. Most people go "don't you wish you had a overdrive" I just shake my head and go Nope!!!!

the 727 is a great tranny, its the TC thats causing all the stink.I have friends with 5sps and dont have heat issues. mine would run over 3/4 hot doing 75 in the summer heat . now with the 93 rad. it stays right where the T state holds it.

I'm guessing its probably pulling just as it was set to from the factory. I know mine couldn't out pull my old 360 gasser with RV cam until I broke off the seal on the full fuel screw.

Are you getting boost? Maybe a clogged fuel filter?
It should be able to pull that all day long as others have said! I owned a 1990 w/ the 727 and never had any complaints as long as I got traction! The current owner always has a loaded bed & pulls a double axle trailer for his scrap metal business and it works great.

we have a hill just south of me that is a 7% grade about a mile long. grossing almost 14k my 90 will gain speed up it running 65 mph. out of od with 308 gear. it would hold its own when stock. i just turned a few screws and added an aftercooler, straightend the exhaust.

Thanks for all the input. Thanks for the manual shift input as well. I'm running a 1990 A727 automatic with a non-lockup torque converter but I understand there are kits to convert to a lock-up style torque converter. That would probably be my most econical route at this point.
I already spent $3400 for the tranny overhaul with upgraded non-lockup torque converter and shift kit. (Took the trans shop 4 attempts and one month to get it mostly right.) Afterward I found that I could have bought a NEW A727 for $1029 plus shipping to Hawaii.
Anybody have any other suggestions?

i hope i never need trans work in Hi. with a good torque converter and a valvebody the 727 doesnt need anything else other than a good stock rebuild. been there done that since 1964. only ones that gave me trouble was due to my stupidity.

just a note
I liked the 727, never had one single issue with it, however I love shifting and I wanted better highway capability. so that meant OD... my options were gear vendors for $3200+++ and STILL stuck with a non lock up auto and poor mpg. or getrag... less than half of the total cost + now I have my stick shift big rig diesel truck I always wanted and mpg is thru the roof at 22+ instead of 15-17
