I'd suggest oversized jets, an MSD, platinum plugs, and some 11:1 pistons first

11:1 is really too high unless you plan on running race gas

hey-Hey!!!,
Well, I put a chip in my 1990.

A friend ov mine made a wood base for his GM70 tube amplifier out ov some exotic hardwood and translucent plastic bits and from one ov the scraps I had him carve me a chip like you'd see thrown from an axe cut on a bit ov firewood. It is hanging from the rear view mirror...
cheers,
Douglas

At first I thought someone had found a ScanGage to work on our trucks. Still it's a good thread for the jokers to chime in with a few sophistries I hadn't heard before, ...

hey-Hey!!!,
It would be useful to access some of the parameters electrically. Injection advance for one. Perhaps a rig like the variable cam timer on an Otto cycle, but on the IP...though I can't believe variable cam timing wouldn't help the Cummins as well...

My chip is just a joke to a very small audience...heh-heh-heh, maybe I need an electrically managed sense ov humour?
cheers,
Douglas
