In the process of making my truck REALLY quiet.
I love the sound of the strait pipe, but while driving there is just way too much road noise, engine noise, and exhaust noise. So to remedy that i am in the process of making my truck almost sound proof.
Since i had the interior out to fix the rusted floor pan I went ahead and started going nuts. With the floor pans done I started by spraying a rust proof coating on the floor and rear wall. Next I put 3 coats of rubberized coating in. Then I put 4 coats of KOOL SEAL in. That should water proof and insulate really well. I'm waiting on the last coat to dry, then I will put in the 3/8" rubber backed sound deadining insulation in. And of course last the original carpet and insulation.
I havent done the doors yet because i am getting new ones, but once i do i will do the same with the insides of them too.
My last part of this project is to yank the dash and dynomat everything i can. That should take care of almost all the squeeks and rattles.
So what do ya think? Think it will be quiet?

LOL, not really. I still want to know its a Cummins, just not hear all the loud noises and rattles. I like the vibration, but hate the squeeky rattles and roaring road. I could bairly hear the radio with it almost all the way up.
Doesnt it sound nice, having a Gen 1 Cummins that rides as quiet as a caddy?

So far with sound deadining I've spent:
Epoxy paint.........................$4.50 per can x3
Undercoating Rubber..........$3.00 per can x3
KOOL SEAL.........................$20.00 1-gallon
3/8" rubber backed insul....$10.00 (scraps from a carpet store)
The dynomat will cost a good bit, but its a one time deal and works great.

Maybe your rattle isnt as bad as mine or something, because its way past the cool Cummins rattle. With mine the doors rattle and squeek, the dash rattles like crazy, and the rusted out floor pan rattled alot.
If it was more like my buddys 96' rattle i could live with it.

Hey man, It's your truck. were all different in what we want from our rigs. If you want it quiet then I think that you are on the right track to making it that way. personally, I like to hear all the noises. after working all night in a sawmill, my truck is'nt that loud anyhow.

I personally like trucks to ride and sound like trucks. If I wanted a quiet, smooth riding vehicle i would have bought a car (or one of those new trucks with that electronic pilot injection tom-foolery ). But, to each his/her own.

I too was bothered by all the noise after I put on the Banks exhaust. My wife wouldn't ride with me, 85 decibels at 70mph. I put Dynamat everywhere inside the cab and it helped some, 77 decibels. I got a lot more effect from the Advanced Thermal Products on the valve cover, turbo, exhaust half way back, and the oil pan, 72 decibels. Finally the Gear Vendor Ovedrive dropped the cruising rpms from 2000 to 1500 at cruising speed. I'm now down to slightly under 70 decibels, but you still can definately tell it's a diesel.
