Press for Getrag Rebuild??
Looks like I will need one for the rebuild of my getrag. I have acess to a few but they are not exactally conveinent. I may just go pick one up at the HF since its been on my list for a while. I'm guessing a 12 or 20 ton floor model would take this thing apart and reassemble it just fine? I already tried to get work to buy one but thats not likely in my time frame. Local places can do it but unless they are letting me use the press and do it myself I don't trust them since I have seen more than a few things come back to the counter broke.

I bought the 12T model from HF and was able to make it work but I had to get creative with my blocking. There were several situations where a larger press would have been easier to use but this will work for you if you're willing to work with it.

I have a 20 ton HF press, and my buddy has a 12 ton. It took every bit of his 12 ton to handle a control arm bushing on a T-Bird, which should have been duck soup for a 12 ton press.
While my 20 ton has been able to handle everything I have thrown at it so far, I wouldn't bet on it actually being able to press its full rating. I watched the Mythbusters destroy a 20 ton identical to mine right there on TV. You shouldn't have part of the press collapse when the pressure is no more than the built in pump/cylinder (a bottle jack) can deliver.
My recommendation, buy the 20 ton, but only when it is on sale.

Marv, I have a HF 20 ton if you want to drive out here and use it. I got it on sale a few years ago for something like $140? Can't remember exactly. I've got a fair amount of sleeves, bearing splitters etc also. -Nick

I'd spend the $140 on a large two jar puller and bearing separator. All you'll ever need to work on the getrag. Like said above, it's a pain to try to build up 2 feet of blocks to get the long mainshaft into the press.

I already have some pretty honkin big pullers. Also I think my work has some in the tool crib. I have found a few presses on Craigslist and am waiting for replies back. The press certainly would not go to waste. Thanks for the idea.
