Question Powertrax

Rate Member posted March 12, 2004 11:32 AM

Has anyone installed the Powertrax “No-Slip” unit in their Dana 70? I’m looking for recommendations. I installed one in my ’95 Cherokee and ran it for over 20k miles with no problems. Loved it. Would do it again in a minute. What scares me on my Dodge is the durability when I have 2k pounds of firewood in the bed and I’m making a sharp turn on concrete. When the tires can’t slip, there’s gonna be hell to pay. Anybody have any input?

I have a friend that had one in a HD application and it caused the center pin to "egg" out the carrier and ruined it.

From what I have read here, and based on my own truck, the center pin and thrust bushings for the spiders and side gears in these dana 70's are really a weak link. Because of that, and the fact that my carrier seems to be worn out and would have to be replaced anyway, I didn't think the powertrax would be a good idea for my truck.

DDD, if you have an early 91 with 3.07, I'm pretty sure you can't add anything aftermarket without machine work.

Mcmopar, thats what happened to mine, and the pin rode out and caught the pinion.

Al, I was told the center pin will wear and create slop. You can pull it and replace cheaply. The lock pin for this can also wear. I was told to inspect the lock pin and if ANY wear is evident, replace it. A new center pin, will reduce slop there, for longevity, but you will always have some play.
