On my MB I used a buffer kit that hooks to a drill or die ginder. 3 wheels and 4 different grades of buffing bars. Cost me $10-15 from Craftsman. Some will say this is not the "proper way" to do it, as it is just laying the crystaline structure of the aluminum over and blah blah blah. I hear a type of wax over it will protect it from skimming over again which will take a month or two. I god rubbing with a cloth would make it look good again for me on the MB.
A REAL proper way ivolves finer and finer grits of sandpaper or something. If you google it you'll find it. Just look up "polishing aluminum valve covers" and there are is enough opinions to make your head spin. However, I do believe this wax idea is good as it will keep it looking good longer. Some time of wax that really hardens and holds up to the heat.

When i did mine i used a little 4x4 orbital sander you use for wood and just got wet and dry type paper. Start with a 220 grit and work your way down to 600 or 1000 grit then the polishing goes quick and easy with good results.
