Please help... I think I ran my truck out of fuel :(

So with diesel prices thru the roof, my poor truck doesn't see more then then $30 at the pump at a time. It was very low, and when I went out to start it after work it wouldn't start. Cranks like crazy, but no start. Can someone give me the sequence of things to do to get it restarted?

also... If it isnt out fuel, what else can I check?

thanks

If its out of fuel your screwed if your in a parking lot. you have to put fuel in it and crack the injector lines open and crank on it to get air out of system. if its not then try the primer on the lift pump. hope this helps

if thats doesnt work it might be the fuel stut off solinoid that went bad,
is the low fuel light on?

Crack open the bleeed screw on the filter base and crank it over. See if you are getting fuel there or not. If you have fuel there, then the shut off solinoid would be suspect next, IMO.

well, I know it is getting fuel to the injectors... I cracked one open thinking it would be enough to bleed it, but I guess not. Its sitting at my work... where we work on semi's. I'm kinda embarrassed to tell you guys I'm a diesel mechanic by trade but don't know how to fix this! lol. Our drivers haven't ran a truck out of fuel yet, so I haven't learned how to deal with this issue.

So was it out of fuel? If so, like said by ofcmarc, you need to open all of the lines and crank it, until you have fuel out of all lines. Then start closing them off. I think there is a sequance? IDK. Good luck

the solinoid will let enough fuel past to have fuel at the injectors but not enough to start it on, you can gut the solinoid and see if it starts then. if so put on a pull cable or replace the solinoid

Crack the back 3 lines and crank until lots of fuel flies out of them then close em tight. Crack the front three and fire it up then close the front three lines.

It will run on 3 cyls. Run like crap but run enough to bleed it out.

When I have ran out of fuel, I loosen the nuts on the front 2 or 3 injectors. When I get fuel there, I tighten them back up and it will usually start. If it will start it has always run rough for a few seconds, then smooth out and run fine. I have never had to bleed all six injectors.

I would check the connection of the wire going to the fuel shut off solenoid. That is the only thing that has ever kept me from starting. I just have to get out, wiggle the wire, and away we go. On a 90 model, you can leave the ignition in the "on" or "run" position, and get under the hood and pull the wire then re-attach it. You should hear a loud "click" when the solenoid opens.

What JMD025 and others have said. The very same thing happened to me. Not a hitch since.

Since fuel is such high dollar, do like I do, treat the 1/2 mark on the fuel gauge as EMPTY. Don't let the fuel in the tank get below half tank. Fill up at half. 10-15 gallons at $5 a gallon isn't as bad as paying for 25 gallons to fill up. This way you won't ever run into this situation of running out of fuel.

If your fuel gauge doesn't work, hopefully your odometer does work. Then just go by miles.
