Smile Piston lift pump what a difference

After installing the piston lift pump we finally got to run it. It ran really good. Running out the PA. turnpike never when below 65mph up the mountains. I guess the old pump was a turd. Now I have to get the injector pump rebuilt or replaced. Hopefully it will be a really good running truck.I can't believe the difference. Old pump we would only run 45-50mph up the mountains have to shift out of 5th. Thanks for all the good info on here

Congrats, its alot to push a barn door through the wind uphill with speed, and your getting there! Good luck on the pump- BTW where are you getting it from.

My truck runs like a scalded dog, as it is, with a stock (the original) lift-pump.

Is the piston lift-pump worth the trouble/expense, should my pump ever need replacing??

I get all my parts from Bayshore Ford, Newark DE. they are a cummins shop. It can't hurt if cummins thinks it's good for our motors. That is really the only reason I got it (Cummins part). We travel such long distance I need a reliable truck.

I too would like to know the deal on this piston lift pump. Why is it better and where's a good place to get it, online preferably?

I know it supplies more pressure to the injection pump versues the old style pump. My injection pump was probably starving for fuel before. No one has had any problems so far that I know of. Those big HP guys run FASS and other high PSI pumps to get a bunch of fuel to the VE pump. I don't need that I want good reliable HP. I want my truck to be a clean running truck (not alot of smoke) when banging though the gear and at WOT. Also I don't want to have to watch the EGTs on every hill! This truck probably weighs over 20,000lbs. Positive fuel pressure to the VE keeps it happy and cool

Check the sticky, guys.

I'm glad to hear the piston pump helped out. I've seen that truck and I think 20k is a very light guesstimate on the weight. I'd put it right around 30k loaded. A heavy load for that poor little 6BTA.

What's the issue with the IP?

The IP seems to be a little weak, not making enough boost. Running 25 psi w/ the fuel screw all the way in. I think w/ a rebuilt or new pump I would be well into the 30s and have cooler EGTs.

before you replace the inj pump check the turbo intercooler and piping for boost leaks. it don't take much of one to lower your boost pressures.

We checked all the connections all good. It seems that we are slowly losing boost and picking up more smoke (haze). When you driving down the highway at night every once and awhile you see a puff of smoke. everything else has been replaced except for the IP so that is why I think it is the problem. Here what I replaced injectors, all the injector lines, lift pump, all the boost hoses, turbo, head rebuilt, arp head studs, anything that we thought might be an issue was replaced.

Have you checked the intercooler for leaks?

Just want you to check everything before spending money to find out it's something else

everything was checked for leaks. we plugged the turbo and the intake pressurized it, attached a air pressure guage to it to see it we had any leakdown. we found none.
