PERFORMANCE BOOSTING - Another injector question...

I was wondering about maybe installing new injectors on my '92. I guess I'd like to boost the performance while not hurting my mpg's. I have seen Bosch injectors on Ebay and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for how I should spend my (meager) dollars. Here are a few questions:

1. Are injectors the answer?

2. If not, suggestions for performance mods that will possibly help mpg's and stay under the $400 range... I know it's not much

3. Are any other mods required if I do install new injectors?

Thanks

Junk Yard Dog is right before you install injectors put in gauges. You will need to know how much heat you are generating with your mods. However if you can find a good set of Bosch 185's for $400 - go for it. As far as preformance/mileage goes look at my sig. I get 21 to 23mpg on the highway and 17.5 around town. My right foot is the best mileage enhancement that I've got.
Good luck

Bob

Why guages? No... I don't have 'em. Sorry if that's a dumb question - I'm a newbie.

When you add fuel to a diesel, you make the fire in the cylinders hotter. Get it too hot, and you will melt the pistons. A gauge called a pyrometer allows you to measure how hot the exhaust is, which is a good indicator of how hot things are inside the cylinders. Just putting injectors in blind, you have a good chance of ruining your engine. You need to be able to monitor what's going on inside the engine, and a pyrometer and a boost gauge will allow you to do that. The boost gauge just lets you know everything's good with the turbo, and you don't have a boost leak.

Not having a pyro on a modified truck is like towing 10,000lbs in hot weather, uphill without a working temperature guage. You know its hot, but not how hot untill something blows. Having a pyro gauge reads the exhuast temps at the turbo and gives you a chance to back off the pedal before you do damage. Exhaust temps can easily reach 1000*!

There are also many other, chepaer(some free) performace mods that you should make before getting injectors.

I'm glad you guys are tolerant of diesel-dimwits like myself. I know we all gotta start somewhere, but thanks for not laughing.

Let me ask another question. Lets say I have a limited budget, but want to do some mods - again, keeping mpg's and mostly interested in mild to medium changes. I am not planning on going all out - I just want to have a little fun in my everyday work truck. Can someone maybe give me a list (in order) of the mods I should consider and rough cost estimates?

Again - thanks

Hi flow air filter($100)
TURN UP THE PUMP(FREE!!!)
Modify throttle linkage and pedal for more travel/turn up high idle screw(FREE)
Replace stock Gov spring with 3200RPM($20)
Smaller Turbo housing, 16cm,14cm or 12cm depending on what you want to do($150)
4" exhaust
Replace stock fuel pin

Then look at the expensive stuff, injectors, hrbrid turbos, porting/polishing etc. About this time you should start looking at tranny upgrades as well. Also a rear posi/locker may be needed.

Did I miss anything?

When I got my truck it was a DOG! I was thinking of selling it untill someone told me to 'turn up the pump'. Now it hauls *** and I cann't wait for summer to see how it pulls a load! Milage has reamined farily consistent at aprox 18MPG. I expect it will go up once it warms up and summer fuel comes back.

1. Straight pipe it! $40 or so.
2. 16 cm turbine housing. It will be like getting a new truck for $150.
3. Gauges - do as I say, not as I do? $200 or so.
4. Play with the pump. It's free! Instructions on pump tweaks. It's pretty safe to play with the fuel pin, star wheel, and smoke screw, but you MUST have gauges if you're going to play with the main screw. That can toast your motor quick.

Straight pipe? Hmmmm.... can you give more details? Noise? Etc?

Oh yeah, where's a good place to look for gauges and turbo housings?

"It's pretty safe to play with the fuel pin,"

I beg to differ. Adjusting the AFC with a stock turbo housing can allow for fueling that will toast the engine at lower rpms.

If you want to honestly play the performance game, get yourself a set of gauges!

If you care about your investment, get yourself a set of gauges!

About the only thing You can do is remove that little round restriction in the exhaust , think it's a muffler, mines been gone since 98.

The free power and performance will come, when you know where you stand. (EGT)

I stole the gauges out of my RX-7 Turbo...matching Autometer Ultra-Lite series.

They are brand new, and cost me $20 (boost) and $679 (egt) off ebay.

Also used a ghetto-fabbed pillar mount dual-pod from a Mustang.

It's only temporary until I fab up a dash mount set-up. I don't want anyone to see my gauges from outside the truck.

Alec, my truck had a ground down fuel pin, a 21 CM housing and a GN hitch when I got it. I suppose you could fry a motor with just AFC tweaks, but whoever worked on my truck was unable to do so despite his best efforts.
