Overfilling Getrag--anyone NOT doing it?
I'm going to change the oil in the Getrag tonight. I bought 5 quarts of 5w30 syn for it, because everything I've read on here says to overfill it by a quart or a quart and a half. Just curious--does anyone not agree with that? Mine has 262 K on it and has never been overfilled and has never been worked on and has no problems, so I'm wondering if I should leave well enough alone and put in the 3.5 quarts or overfill it and tempt fate. Advice please? (And quickly!)

I've serviced lots of these, and I've sometimes added maybe half a quart extra, but I'm more inclined to help them out by servicing them more frequently than by adding a whole quart of extra fluid. I worry about the extra strain the overfilling would put on the seals by submerging them.

I overfill mine with five quarts, no problems, no leaks, heavy hauling.
I saw a Getrag fry, once, long ago, so red it was sizzling; it was not overfilled.
Then, on the other hand, there are a bejillion of them, out there, that have never had the fill plug screwed out, and still going strong.

DO overfill it, put five quarts in it that helps keep the main bearings that are in the top saturated. I have not heard of any problems with it causeing seals to blow out or causeing leaks. take the top bolt of the pto cover out and fill it there it dose take awhile but worth the pice-of-mind.

My Getrag blew the rear seal with five liters in, altho' that could be my lousy seal installation six months prior as well. I don't know if these are vented cases, so I hedged last week with 5 1/2, ...so far we're about 50-50 on this one.

This was discussed somewhere, a few months ago.
Early Getrags, like mine, have a simple jiggle-cap vent on top, near the shift-tower; while, later Getrags have no provision for venting.

I thinkn they all had a vent- they'd have to, or they'd blow seals when factory filled. I drilled my vent hole out to accept a 1/8NPT plug, then put a barbed elbow in there, ran a hose up along side the dipstick for the engine, and I have had no more leaks. Most of the leaks I've seen have been either the vent outlet, or the boot on the shift tower (the one that goes on the tranny, not one of the 2 inside the cab.)
