You can add from top, by pulling the shifter. Its a little tricky Ive heard. You can also pull a pto bolt hole and fill through there using a oil hand pump from oreillys (according to miciahfied). Overfill is 4.5-5qts total.

The 'Ford does not own Cummins' enforcer.
if you fill it from the top remove the shifter boot then theres a snap ring u have to remove put a little bit of pressure downwards on the shifter itself cause it is spring loaded and then take the ring out and remove the shifter....and add away.......i do believe it is 5 qts

5 qts total volume for the tranny, or overfilled by 5 qts?
How full is to full? can it be filled all the way up right, I think their is a vent just infront of the shifter, am I wrong? If I get to full will it damage it, or just run out?
PS this is my 100th post!!

5 Quarts total to fill. If you overfill it will come out the vent and possibly the seals. 5 quarts is enough. I fill mine from one of the top PTO cover bolts on the side of the tranny.

Three-and-a-half quarts standard fill plus one-and-a-half quarts "overfill" equals FIVE total quarts in the transmission.
Many of the down-and-dirty methods of over-filling leave one with no means of checking the fluid level, once the fluid is dumped in.
Take the time to search all the Getrag threads, as there are numerous ingenious methods of being able to add the extra oil and also be able to check it's level.
Myself, on one truck, I replaced the fill-plug with an adapting street-ell (1/2"NPT MALE X 3/4"NPT FEMALE), this ELL pointing straight up, into which I screwed a three-inch length of 3/4 pipe-nipple, capped with a pipe-cap that has a dip-stick welded into the center of it.
I poured in four quarts, checked the level and notched the dip-stick "add-a-quart", added the fifth quart and notched the dip-stick "FULL".
On another truck, I borrowed an idea that I learned at the Kentucky 1st Gen. picnic/meet and have a clear tube routed from the fill-plug hole to just behind the windshield-washer jug.
This one can be filled from under the hood.
YES, that little jiggle-cap thingie, on top, is the vent.
