oil smoke help

Hi gang, I'm running a first gen in a 1896 case tractor. The thing starts and runs good. the problem is if you run it at operating speed (2200 rmps) for any length of time and pull it all the way to idle it blows alot, and I mean alot of oil smoke,if you pull it back to 1200 rpms(no smoke) and let it set there for 3-4 mins. then you can idle it all the way down and no smoke, no smoke at full throttle. I just bought this and started using it so I'm not sure of what might of caused this, the only thing i have done to it is change the oil and filter, and never ran it at rpms before the change to know if it was part of the cause. Could this be a broke oil ring, turbo seals, valve stem seals? thanks ahead of time, Terry.

Is it crankcase oil or diesel oil? Check the crossover tube inside for oil to see if it's a leaking compressor seal. About the only thing I can think of that would make the compressor leak would be a restricted oil return from the turbo bearings.

I'm not experienced enough to tell you if valve guides would do this. I think that since there isn't any vacuum that little oil would be sucked past the guides.

I would thing a piston ring would show up as a miss faster than oil smoke but again I'm guessing.

If it's diesel oil smoke then you've got a problem with the IP.

I'm sure somebody else will give you better advise tomorrow.

Edwin

Like Edwin said, a restricted drain will make oil leak out of the turbo. Check the exhaust side of the turbo as well as the compressor for oil. If there's oil in the downpipe from the trubo, pull the turbo off the manifold to see if the oil is coming from the turbo or the engien. You should be able to narrow things down a bit which will make the problem easier to figure out.
