odometer not working
I'm new to the Cummins family. Just recently purchased a '91 D250 for one of my sons. It's in great shape but has at least one of the problems that seem to be prevalent with the these trucks - the speedometer.
I've read many of the previous posts on speedometers. Ours has a different problem than what I've been seeing. The previous owner replaced the speed sensor at the transmission. The speedo indicates but it is faster than actual speed. I can live with that. What I don't want to live with is the odometer does not work. Neither the trip meter or the odometer move at all. It's stuck at 65K.
Has anyone heard of or experienced this? If so, what's the fix? Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem, the 1991 trucks use a VDO electronic speedometer. The odometer is operated independently by a stepper motor triggered by the pulses of the sender. This turn a little plastic gear train which turns the odometer wheels, the plastic gear breaks a tooth then it stops. You need to take it to a speedo shop and it is fixed for around $90.00 (California). Man says it is the weak point on the VDO electronics. It worked for me, hope it helps. Jim.

Looked in Yahoo and found a place right here in Austin - Overseas Speedometer. They turned it around quickly and I now have an odometer and a tripmeter again! The speedometer is not reading dead on - it's about 5 to 10 mph below actual depending upon the speed. The weird thing is that it gave some real erratic readings when it was first installed but has since settled in and indicated steadily.
By the way, those plastic irons used for removing and replacing bicycle tires work great for removing the dash panel. That dash seems to have a mind and muscles of its own. As soon as you get one side worked out from the clips and start on the other, the first side tries to slip back into the clips.
Thanks for the help!

First pull the cluster bezel (the main dash trim). On later trucks you first need to remove the plastic cladding around the column (screws on the bottom, then snapped together). The cluster bezel has a row of screws across the top, and one above the radio. Once you are sure all the screws are out, the cluster bezel pulls off. Then you can see the screws that hold the instrument cluster in.

Are th 92's the same because mine does not work? and I am trying to keep my driving to a minimum. So were gears broken or did the motor die? Is there any way the sender from the transmission could get broken or just stop working?
Tanks and glad to see you got it working again
