Question O-rings for the valve covers.........question

Ok, I am planning to do a valve adjustment on my 93' next week. I have new Cummins brand valve cover gaskets and the appropriate tools to get the job done. I did some reading on here and discovered that there are 0-rings that seal the valve cover bolts. Here are my questions:

What do these o-rings seal exactly?
How many o-rings are required for the valve covers?
What are the o-rings made of (special materials for oil/heat exposure)?
Does any have a part number or price for a set of them?

Thanks!

I just did the same thing a few days ago. I got my gaskets at NAPA and the o-rings came with the valve cover gaskets. As far as I can tell they're just run of the mill o-rings to keep the oil from spewing out the top of the valve cover. You only need one o-ring per valve cover bolt. You'll see how they sit when you pull the valve cover bolts...that is if the o-ring hasn't rotted away. Mine were. Are you sure they didn't come with your valve cover gaskets?

Nah,

the valve cover gaskets I recieved are true CUMMINS brand ones and did not come with the o-rings. I'm guessing this is an item I can get locally at the dealer or diesel shop? I just want to make sure I get the right ones.

Yeah, mine are all but rotted and gone. Unless you have absurd blow-by, the o-ring won't leak

A hardware store o-ring will work.

I assume that this O-ring is nothing special. In that case I have access to generic black o-rings that I can use.

Crap! Geno's Garage sent me six rubber noise isolators (the rubber thing that holds the beauty plate above the valve covers) instead of the O-ring.

rubber hose smashed between the bolt head and the valve cover works pretty good, cut it thin and tighten down the bolts,no oil for about 500 miles cheap and quick.

I know, I know....I should have used the genuine article . It was kinda a last minute thing to run the valves and change the valve cover gaskets. Minus 20 horsepower for me!
