non intercooled to intercooled egt loss during towing?

ok guys i have touched base on this before but i want to know what you non intercooled guys were running before and after your intercooler swaps for egts when you were towing i am trying to simulate what will happen when i get mine in the mud. will i only lose 100 egts or more i am going to put it in either way however it would be nice to get an estimate on how much i could potentially lose. it is with a 2nd gen ic too so i hear somewhere around 300 but if the truck isnt moving no air will be passing through it thus creating a less dense mixture and higher egts correct? thanks

correct, if there's no air flowing across the I/C it's cooling efficiency is less, but at least there's a heat exchanger of some sort doing some work. i, also, have heard that you should see an egt drop of about 300 degrees. that may have been with a powerstroke I/C. not sure if the 2nd gens will drop it as much. but it's better than no I/C.

i couldn't tell you what my temps were before and after my I/C and i have yet to put a thermocouple in mine. the old one either broke of or stopped sending a signal to my gauge. or my gauge is busted, who knows. i plan on getting newer gauges anyway, just to keep up with technology i suppose. i'm easy on it though and haven't towed with it, so i'm not so worried about egt's.

Put electric fans in it...then you'll have air anytime you need it. I would do that for any rig i was mudding with...diesel or not.

yeah kinda wilde to have a diesel mudder not really the greatest thing but it is sure better than the 6.2 liter. i got the whole truck with the cummins for 500 bucks so i swapped it out. I do have a good electric fan that i will be putting right up front and running it wide open. i started tearing it down tonight it looks like it will be a good fit. however one thing i wanted to know was what size pipe to run? the outlets on the ic are 3.5 but i have a bunch of 3 inch pipe laying around and my intake horn is 3 inch so i think that is what i will run.

I'm going to run 3" on my ps intercooler. The id of the ic is 3" but the od is more like 3.5". Intake horn is 3" on my truck as well so I don't see much point in going bigger if it restricts back down to 3".

3" intercooler pipes compared to the stock 2.5" are 30% larger in cross-section area.

I just switched from a 2.5" non i/c crossover to a 2nd gen setup (3" with smaller air horn). I also retarded my timing about 1/8 from where it was (3/16), and turned up the fuel screw.

I noticed playin around (ambient temps 80f) that the pryo was about the same. Cruising on the freeway is about 100 degrees lower with the timing change.
I lost about 10psi boost, but cleared up more smoke. Pretty sure Ive got lots of drive pressure cause the egts go up quick still, even tho there isnt much smoke. I guess that means more power.
Picked up about 150 kms per tank fuel economy wise.
Touching the hot side is hot, the cold side is cold to the touch.

More bottom end, less smoke, faster spoolup. Oh, and less egts in the hole. Its still more advanced than stock.

Not to derail the thread, but diesel mud trucks aren't wierd....... They dominate

Enjoy:

For muddin' you might want to look into a water to air IC. They can give max cooling even sitting still.

3" plumbing should be sufficient, that's what most people use.
