Non I/C KSB Operation
I was browsing through the "Injection Pump" section of my B Series Engine Shop Manual and came across a page with an explanation of how the non i/c KSB operates with a wax pellet type solenoid. also, there's a page explainingg the need for a KSB starting on 1988 VE pumps. thought this would be something that's possibly worthy as a sticky for the newbie's joining that are curious to know about KSB operation. others might still enjoy reading this as well.
"1988 emissions requirements prompted the need for a cold starting timing advance system, Kalt Start Beschlenniger (KSB), to minimize white smoke.
After the engine starts, the KSB fully advances the ignition timing at low idle until the engine warms up. The KSB is not functional after the engine reaches normal operating temperature."

whoops, the last sentence should say "injection timing" instead of "ignition timing". whew, i could've gotten banned for using gasser terminology . maybe that's why there have no replies to this thread .

Interesting. Now the question: if the KSB does not work on an 89 truck, what is the most likely cause, how do you diagnose/remedy?
Mine obviously does not work since the engine is hard to start, shudders, lets out smoke until it's warm and then runs fine.
What do you guys think?

i'll scan another picture or few pictures and get some info for you in about an hour or so direct from the troubleshooting section. tells and shows how you can test the solenoid.
