Noises ???

My 92 is making noises under the hood. Sounds like altenator or serpintine belt tensioner. I only got 70k mines. Changed belt about 750 miles ago. Cant isolate cuz of common belt. What is failure rate of tensioner, sounds like bad bearing somewhere.
JJ ???

Re:Noises ???

Haven't been with Cummins long enough, they do go often on gasser's though. Check for in and out play.

Re:Noises ???

I replaced my tensioner pulley early last summer, was not hard, but it sounds like it's going again, it was a no name aftermarket unit. Dodge and Cummins would not sell the wheel by it self only the whole tensioner unit $$$$.

Re:Noises ???

Re:Noises ???

I've got 162,000 miles on my truck and tensioner are still going strong. I replaced my belt when I did my KDP in Nov. of 2002. BTW I had a NAPA belt ON plus a Dayco spare. The NAPA belt looked pretty sad especially after only 50,000 miles.
Bob

Re:Noises ???

Take a piece of garden hose and use it as stethoscope and you may be able to isolate the noise problem. I have 107,000 km on my truck and have still the original tensioner but have replaced the serpentine belt. I kept the old belt as a back-up.
---
Al

Re:Noises ???

I'm going to bet it's your water pump. That's the mileage mine starting squeeking than it started dripping soon after. Had no idea what that noise was.

Re:Noises ???

Well driving home from work yesterday noise is back worse than ever. Cant quite isolate it, thinking about popping off serpintine belt and giving everthing a shake down. Belt tensioner in hopping back and forth a little. Back to work.

JJ

Re:Noises ???

Do you have an air conditioner? Sometime the bearing on the compressor clutch can make trouble for you. That's what happened to my 89 Astro van, judgeing by what you said about the tensioner jumping up and down. Just another thing you can check on. : :
