As far as needing so much power, check out what the big trucks get away with. Scale it on a hp/weight ratio and I suspect we'd be left with an IDI VW motor making 48 or perhaps 52 hp...heh-heh-heh.

Challenge accepted. I have had one of those. Had being the operative word...

1st Gens:

160hp/400ft lbs of tq
Weight 6000 (What I weighed in at)

1hp/37.5 lbs
1ft lbs of tq/15 lbs

4th Gens

350hp/800ft lbs of tq
Weight 7000 (GVWR minus Payload)

1hp/20lbs
1ft lbs of tq/8.75ft lbs of tq

85 VW Golf 1.6L NA

52hp/71ft lbs of tq
Weight 2445 (Wikipedia)

1hp/47.01lbs
1ft lbs of tq/34.43

Benefit of the doubt

85 VW Golf 1.6L TURBO'd

68hp/91ft lbs of tq
2445 lbs

1hp/35.95lbs
1ft lbs of tq/26.86lbs

Our 1st Gens are the closest to the VW IDI. We get better mileage do to NO emission crap in the intake and exhaust and because we are LIGHT.

You can say all you want about not needing 800ft lbs of torque in your 1st Gen but ask me that when you need to move a load into traffic. Cry about them being heavier and towing more than you but they are designed to take-off and stop better with more weight.

Personally, I think 1st Gens are not towing monsters in stock form. Now, there is NOTHING wrong with getting the truck up to 4th Gen status. Get bigger brakes, more power, and get just as good of mileage as a CR 6.7L with all the emissions deleted.

I've thought about this too, although my rig only has to tow it's own weight (for now). I told a buddy about getting 27mpg with mine, and he said "Well you can't rightly sell that!" and I am inclined to agree. I just don't know whether my 1st gen will be a hot rod or tow rig or what, after it gets through with its life as a magazine project build. Right now the idle haze is the only annoying thing with the truck, and even that wouldn't be an issue if I lived outside of Metro Los Angeles.

The big gain you got with gigle juice versus straight k2 tells me that you need a lot more air. By the numbers, if you can get more air going into those ported intake ports you should be able to get in the 600's on straight fuel. just my $.02
Awesome numbers though.

i guess the cheap guys and the young crowd pic up first gens bomb the heck out of them..then upgrade..i can see it hapening to me soon.

its hard to compete with new stuff yes it breaks more costs more to buy more to run etc etc.......but those comforts are worth it

ride in a new duramax with a tune

will blow the doors off my first gen all while the heated seats are on.

and iam into mine for $16k

either i need to spend more money or give up and pass her along

so the question is..............HOW long have you owned your truck............and plan on owning it.

I can't justify paying 60K for a pickup truck. If I put 15K into my truck it would have another color sanded paint job and be perfect. As it is, I keep driving it and it keeps running, just rolled to 377K Friday, and I can tell you that no Dmax around her with a tune can beat my truck, non that I have seen anyway.

Same here, the other gen trucks are nice too IMO but I'll always have a 1st gen along with whatever else I have.
