New Injector Pump..OD & Cruise Control Problems. (Long)
Well, I got my new injector pump installed from the recall. But, since I've gotten it back, the cruise control will not hold at a steady speed. Also, it continually kicks in and out of OD. I thought that I read somewhere that TPS problems could effect the Cruise control also.....Is this right?? That TPS was just put on in September and checked out perfect then. The old one was also good, so I've got two supposedly good TPS's. I tested the TPS after getting the truck back, and I am getting .6 volts at idle, but very little increase with throttle increase. I tested with both TPS's on and got exact same readings. One thing that is different: the dealership installed the TPS with the wiring connector facing the front of the truck. It was facing "up" before (towards the passenger side). Could it be installed that bad out of adjustment?? I noticed that the shaft under the TBS has a stop on it that contacts the bracket it is bolted to if adjusted too far. The way that the dealership has the TBS installed, it isn't under any spring tension.....should I just turn it under tension to the original position and test it there? Or should I let the dealership do it. I gotta take it back anyway since the pump is leaking from both ends :.........Told them about the other problems and ended up in a full blown argument with the service manager. He basically accused me of lying about the cruise being fine previous to them working on it. Said there would be a ticket wrote up and a charge to check out that and the other stuff. I said, "could you have just made a mistake. Can you just check the linkage and TPS and make sure it is adjusted properly?" He said he would, but there is only one way the TPS goes on and it can't be adjusted. He's full of crap > > I am sick of them and if I can just turn the TPS to the proper position then I will do it myself. It seems that when I installed it before, there was some spring tension on it. If I just turn it 45 degrees, it will be in the right position and I assume under tension. But I sure don't want to pop that little $200.00 part's spring. ??? Sorry this is so long...any help is greatly appreciated. If I can just get free from these morons......Fed Up in Arkansas signing off.

Hey,
The connector of the TPS has to be facing the engine. Its in the wrong position, thats why it won't go much higher. Point it out to the dealer and make him fix it. Have them fix the leak at the same time. TPS's can be adjusted in 10 sec with a 10mm wrench, under the steel bracket if its mounted right.

Thanks Mark......I think I will wait. It is just hard to let the truck sit out there "broke" while I wait till Monday. You know, that "fix it" instinct (and knowing they will have their hands on it again....SCARY). I did turn the TPS to its correct position and test it (temporarily). From where they have it set, it starts out at 8.3 and goes off the scale at WOT. Is this gonna hurt the truck if I drive it till Monday?? After turning TPS to the correct position, It will adjust down to .9 v at idle, but it goes up around 8.0 at WOT...this is as far as it will adjust without readjusting the hex head bolt in the shaft (since the vinyl tab is hitting the stop on the bracket at idle). What is the consequences of it going so high?? I just want to be armed with info when I do go to the dealer... Rather!@@ #@#frathing!!@##$@#@humper!!!@!@!smasher!@!..... call me a liar!!!! Humph!! > >

Sounds all too familiar.......I have this argument before with service managers. I would point out that while the pump was being replaced the TPS had to be removed and reinstalled and it is not unreasonable for it to have not been done correctly. Ask them to hook it up to their scanner and see if it is within the proper specifications. If not then adjust it. If and only if the TPS is found to be faulty you would be willing to pay them for their time. Ask to be there when they do the test. If they refuse for whatever reason ask for the number of the regonal general service manager, customer service rep and that you would like to speak with the owner of the dealership.

Has worked for me the few times it got to that point.

Now for what its worth, on my TPS the connector points toward the engine. When the TPS is off the plastic lug sits at about a 45 deg angle, top toward the front of the truck. When the TPS is installed I have to rotate it CCW 15-20deg for it to engage the plastic lug.

Good luck

Jay

When you look at the two mating parts of the TPS, that is the hex head and hex socket, keep in mind that having the "flats" of the hex head off by just one "flat" is enough to throw your entire range of operation/adjustment out the window....

As jbolt said, the connector MUST be pointed to the engine and the spring loading on the hex head (bolt end) can cause it to do a tiny rotation when removed. That minor rotation can mean that the hex head will fit in one of two positions when re-installed. It must go back in the same position it came out of.
Don't mess with it..... let them fix it, and insist on watching !!
If you adjust it too much now, then even when re-installed it may be tough to find the original position(s) of things.
Voltage can range from a low of 0.5vdc to a high of 1.25vdc depending on the overall system (eg: throttle cable, tranny etc etc.) the important part is the total increase from the idle voltage... it should be an increase of 2.25 - 2.75vdc above idle (at rest) setting.
Good luck....

bob.

Re:New Injector Pump..OD & Cruise Control Problems. (Long)
Well, its fixed. I took it in Monday morning with three loud kids in tow. Said I couldn't leave and would be in the waiting room (a very small dealership. Every salesman's desk in earshot). We wasn't there long before they had it in the shop and working on it. I had told the service manager that the TPS was on wrong and needed to be turned and adjusted and that the pump was leaking from both ends. About 30 minutes after getting there, the service manager came got me and proceded to explain to me why the TPS had to be installed with the connector facing the front of the truck!!! I explained to him how it works and took it and turned it to show him how, yes, it will go on the way that I said. He said fine, I'll put it on like YOU want it. I also explained to him that it had to be adjusted. Got it back and asked him did the voltage check out okay; he said, "Yes....everything tested fine." Test drove and cruise control worked perfect, but no overdrive. Pulled over and tested the voltage....was reading 8 volts at idle. I adjusted it and it works great!! It still leaked though, so me and the kids (they sure are a sweet blessing ;D) went back and sat down. They fixed it very promptly. Thank God that I am through (I hope) with them forever!! Moral of the story: there are much more persuasive ways of getting things done than with direct confrontation
