My engine stand is the same way. Mine has a slight angle on the plate though. As long as those are grade 8 bolts.. it will hold it all day (:

The only item I had to pay for on this build was the welding rod.
Got everything else from my neighbor who was cleaning up his farm junk.

 

I don't see why mounting it that way would be an issue as there is less torque being applied to the mount. Its the difference of holding a rifle with one hand by the end of the butt stock vs the center of the rifle.
