need some info about gauge cluster in '92
hey guys,
I need to find out what ohms the resistor on the back of the guage cluster is.
in other words if you were to take out your gauge cluster out of a '92 and flipped it around you would see a silver square resistor on it.. if someone knows what it is set for that woul dbe great, if not and someone could use a voltmeter to check the ohms on it, that would be awesome also.
thanks for any help

well crap.. on my '85 the resistor is on the back of the dash.. I figured it was for the '92 also..
thanks for taking the time.. now I need to figure out where the resistor is on a '92
the gist of my issue.. is the fuel gauge will not read correct because I need to figure out what resistance it needs to read correct.
IE: trying to figure what where the resistor is..

As far as I can see there is no voltage regulator or resistor on my 91 cluster.
All of the senders go to ground.
I wanted to find one also, the only electronics were in the information center.

Pretty sure the resistor is actually on the sending unit in the tank. It should be a variable resistor that changes with the fuel level in the tank. Not 100% sure just an educated guess.

I am not sure what you were looking at on your old cluster but if it looks like a circuit breaker only about half as thick, they used to use a voltage regulator to drop the voltage for the gauges, I think they were a vibrating type.

As far as I know they do not use them anymore, I f I remember correctly I measured 12 volts at the rear of the gauge.

ok I drew up a very bad drawing of how my fuel gauge is wired
sending unit has 4 wires..
1 low fuel (not hooked up)
1 ground
2 together are power
guage in dash has 3 wires
1 connects to power in sending unit
1 connects to 12 volt power
1 is ground.
I think there needs to be a resistor on the 12 volt power from battery to gauge in dash.
also if i lift the sending unit ground of chassis the guage will go to FULL
then if i reconnect it, and lift ground of gauge side it will go to empty.. so the gauge does work and move.. I just can not get it to read correct when everythign is connected.. if both grounds are connect gauge stays at 1/4 tank no matter how much fuel is in tank.

For some reason the newer gauges with the electric speedo will read 1/4 full if there is a break in the connection going to the tank. I noticed this whenever I had hooked up a temporary test gauge to check the accuracy of the in dash gauge a few years ago.
