Need some advice: Rear Driveshaft needs modification...

Hey folks,

So, I have to get my rear driveshaft shortened.

I'm a little confused on how to measure.

Basically, the long shaft slips into the yoke that bolts to the ujoint and to the Getrag.

But, I'm not sure how far into the yoke the shaft should go. Should I give it some play in either direction? Right now it's TIGHT in the yoke, but I think that that's wrong...but not sure how much extra to give it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

With truck on the ground, measure from diff to transfercase yokes. Center of yoke to center of yoke. The flat of yoke were u-bolts or strap bolts is center. The drive shaft shop will allow for drive shaft movement.

The slip joint is normally centered on the length of the splines with the rear axle & tires is lifted from the ground. My local shop wanted the dimensions which are center to center of the universal joint with the slip joint fully engaged and then with the slip joint backed off to the point where the splines are beginning to show.

If you are 100% sure the shaft yoke is completely engaged at your current length you would simply need to remove the driveshaft and rubber boot cover on the slip yoke. Then measure the above mentioned amount of yoke travel and subtract half the total travel distance of the splines. This should give you the amount of excessive length that needs to be removed. Measure twice and cut once.

if you can take the truck down to the shop and let them determine what's needed, that'd be even better: they do that all day long.

No carrier bearing. It's just a yoke and a shaft to the rear.

Ha. Not a chance there...would be nice, though.

Ok, so I'm going to slip the thing to the middle of the yoke on the slip joint and then measure and I'll just take my chances...seems like it's not rocket science.

Thanks for the replies, guys!
