Need KSB troubleshooting help

I need some KSB troubleshooting information. I have a 90 non IC pump. There is no change to the engine speed or sound when the solenoid is jumpered to +12V. It draws about 1/2 amp after a couple of minutes so the coil is working. The controller has no voltage under 59F and voltage above 59F. Any ideas what to check or where the problem might be?

The non-ic pumps ksb works backwards from the ic version. Removing the power will advance the timing. The non-ic is also a wax motor
type and may take a minute to work.

If in doubt, you can unscrew the solenoid and watch it while you power it up. Like Marc said, it moves slooooww...

KSB wax motor test

OK, the wax motor moves all the way in about 2 minutes, faster than I thought it would. I can't hear a difference. How can I test the rest of the system?

Pull the plug out of the other end of the KSB housing and make sure the check ball is free and nothing is gunked up.

Would this check also apply to an IC as well. Mine is not working either.

Yes. They work the same except for the type of solenoid used.

non IC KSB innards

Results of removing the KSB check valve. Found some very fine (finer than a hair) non ferrous shavings mainly around the threads of the check valve and the smaller O ring. Cleaned it up and put it back together (check valve is 19mm & wax motor is 22mm). Started with engine warm (should not advance now?) and heard the the engine RPM increase after about 10 seconds. Ideas?

It looks good.

Is the truck having any sort of issues that lead you to believe the KSB is not working? Excessive white smoke/poor idle when cold?

White smoke at startup and under heavy acceleration (with major hesitation).

My next step would be to pull the pressure regulator valve out and have a look at that. It's the thing the KSB line runs up to. Take a look at Jim Lane's writeup in the sticky about repairing a leak there, that will tell you what to expect to see when you pull it apart.
