Need help with poor mileage
How's everyone doing? I haven't been on much the last couple of weeks as we've been moving our shop to a new location. Anyways, the truck has gotten a lot of work hauling about 40 loads on my trailer.
I seem to be getting very poor mileage - about 250 miles to 22 gallons. I changed the lift pump a few weeks ago because it was leaking, but I can't seem to find anymore leaks and I am at the verge of wanting to sell this thing if it keeps drinking fuel the way it is. I love the power, but I don't seem to be getting the huge fuel mileage that I keep hearing these 1st gens in particular get. Any suggestions? I still haven't had the time to move the smoke screw flush with the AFC cap or move up the star wheel, but I don't think those changes will give me double the mileage. HELPPP!

Trans seems to be doing well - it was rebuilt about 2 years ago. I installed the shift kit and adjusted the bands a few weeks back as well. It doesn't take much to get the truck moving. In fact, without spooling up the turbo, I can lay 50+ feet of rubber from a dead stop. The truck is very responsive, but I appreciate the suggestion, Boatnik.

adj star wheel and smoke screw.......then see if the mileage is a factor.......did you mark you original setting before you started turning them?
if so put it back to were it was originally and so what happens.

Tires are 235/85R16 at 50psi. It really never has given me great mileage. After I did the lift pump I managed about 300 miles to a tank while towing my Jeep (about 7K with trailer). Maybe it's just the city driving, but I was sure hoping for a lot more than what I'm getting. I will try and adjust the smoke screw and star wheel this weekend, but the temp is hovering around 20*F and my garage isn't heated.
Would a bad fuel filter cause the mileage to be this bad? It looks fairly new to look at, but I guess looks could be deceiving.

I run empty all the time and I have my tires 65psi in the front and 50psi in the rear on 235-85-16 so that could make a difference. I can tell a difference in mileage when one of my tires gets low.
For the fuel filter I change mine every two years regardless of miles which works out to be around 12-14000 miles for what I drive now.

I run all my tires at max most of the time. I also can tell by the MPG when the tire pressures are off. My MPG has dropped a little with the cold weather it seems. I used to get 20 mpg plus easy not I can barley touch 20 Mpg. I'm going to try and few thing and see what happens.
