Need to get this thing to stop smoking on the highway.

So seems I've go a few people telling me my dodge rolls on the coal pretty good when I put my foot into her is there any way I can make it just burn that fuel instead of puking it out the exhaust? 16cm turbo housing maybe or adjusting the star wheel?

because of reliability, or other reasons?

these trucks are pretty easy to give a timing bump. they wont slip or get a mis-reading like a p-pump if that makes you feel better

i like the idea of a smaller exhaust housing, or just getting a hx35 for it with the 12cm exhausting on it already.

- Back the smoke-screw all the way out. You may (also) find benefit by grinding a little meat on the underside of the AFC lid allowing the fuel pin to come up a little higher. This will help with the puff of smoke when you first tip into the throttle.

- Raise the star-wheel up (increasing the spring pressure on the bottom of the fuel pin's diaphragm). This will force the engine to come up with more boost before the fuel comes on hard (not as aggressive). This will clean up the part throttle smoke. You'll have to dink with this a few times to get the throttle response where you want it, while keeping the smoke under control (like you want it).

- If you're planning on running an aftermarket fuel pin, get one like the M&H M3. It has a more conservative ramp for bringing on the fuel (again, not as aggressive).

Actually, more timing may not help in terms of improving part throttle smoke, as increasing the timing will put more heat of combustion in the cylinder (putting more heat energy to the crankshaft), and less heat of combustion out the exhaust to power the turbo (reference the apparent loss of boost when turning up the timing).

The Hx 35 is a better turbo than the stock one! You now probably have a 18 or 21 exhaust housing. Go to a Hx35 witha 12 wastegated unless you have a lot of extra fuel. It will spool up much quicker!!! If you have a lot of extra fuel try a 16 housing.
You NEED to push the pump over towards the head 1/8 inch and you really need to get a 3000 rpm spring in it.
You will be happy and the truck will be much different.
Do you have pyro and boost gauges??? Very important for EVERY modified diesel.

X2 When I replaced my IP, the instructions that came from the shop said to push it ALL the way to the head. I knew nothing about diesels, I hadn't discovered this site yet, I wondered what was the purpose of the timing marks and the truck never ran better. To this day I don't know what they did to the pump. Besides the bolt on the backside, it is easy and very undoable, if you don't like the results. It is not the same as jumping a tooth, which requires removal of the pump. Also, make sure your valves are adjusted properly...Mark
