Need 727 rebuild help - Tips, Tricks & Tools
I have been staring down my 727 tranny for a week now and it has yet to rebuild itself, so I guess I'll have to do it. I read the ATSG manual and it seems pretty staight forward (famous last words). It shows a lot of speciality tools that I do not have, so which do I really need?
Any tips/tricks from some seasoned Gen 1 tranny masters? I appreciate all the help.

snap ring pliers mainly, hardest part is r&r of front clutch piston. I have homemade fixture that works with piece of allthread to compress the springs in the front clutch.Check all piston bores for galding, check for wear where all three sets of seal rings ride. That would be inside the reaction shaft support, inside of the front clutch retainer and inside the governor support in the rear of the case. The seal ring push out from the pressure, check the sides of the grooves where the seal rigs rub.

Don't forget a good shift kit (like B&M). Your clutches will last a lot longer that way. Pick the hardest shift you can stomach. I personally like the hardest shift and let the tires smooth it out!

Thanks for all the quick responses. I am looking at the TCI master rebuild kit which includes a valve body mod to stiffen the shifts.
I noticed that most of the special parts are buching removers/installers. Do you need something like that or is there a better (cheaper) solution?
I appreciate the offer for a spare 727, but honestly I don't even really want the one I have. I really want a 47RH, or manual, but I have neither available and the manual has the wrong output spline count. I need the overdrive!
