ok, i am trying to rebuild my pump because it was leaking from where the head goes in. i got all the gasket kit and took my pump all apart. it ran fine before i took the pump off just leaked. now that i put it back together and in the truck it will barely irun and hard to start and when it does run it surges and will not idle. and smokes white like crazy. i don't know what i did wrong. i know i did leave a part out. but its the lever that goes to the smoke pin. if i put this part back in do you think it will straighten up? why would it surge and smoke? the timing marks are all lined up

 

it seems like it is not getting enough fuel. the fuel pump on the side of the motor works good. and it was hard for me to get the keyway lined up on the internal fuel pump in the front of the injection pump.maybe that keyway fell out and its not turning the pump good enough. another question. what regulates the fuel pressure inside the pump?

 

Timing maybe? I assume if you had the confidence to take the pump off, you knew to lock it.

Might have mashed that key. It is a PITA to line up that key, Maybe it rolled out and the taper of the shaft is enought to hold it slightly of right now.

I assure you, if it spins on there, it will NOT run. Mine spun before I put on a new pump and it was DONE. only fuel from 2 injectors.
