Is my alternator fried?

Is my alternator fried?

Not charging, both the field terminals have 12v even with the alternator unplugged (just the battery cable and ground attached). Not finding this situation through searching. If it is the alternator is it a part I can replace inside of it or do I have to get a new one?

Exactly where did you disconnect the field and was the engine running when you checked the voltage? What year is you truck? Internal (PCM) or external voltage regulator?

the plug that includes the ac plug is what I disconnected, truck running, key on, or key off those 2 field studs have the same 12v as battery. Its internally regulated, the pcm fried so i tried external regulators they didnt work, one didn't charge so i returned it and the next one they gave me charged at 17v.

So some info that would have been helpful to start with, sorry.

1992 auto pcm fried so deleted it. Alternator had the same issue before i deleted pcm (12v at both field studs). Like i said tried external regulators and didnt work so i ordered one of those internal ones with no change.

got it figured out, just incase anyone else runs into this problem, its probably because the ground on the internal regulator is in the wrong spot, ground it to the same screw you mount the regulator with otherwise you end up like me.
