mwe slot

Hi I need info. on mwe slot on a WH1C turbo I need to cut a slot in a H1C how deep, how wide , what shape of cut, how far back it is form front edge of air intake. Except for the turbo surging I like the way my truck runs so i feel no need to up grade the turbo until it craps out. Looking at SWANK' photos I have good idea of where it goes but would like more info. before butcher my turbo. any info. would help Thanks Corey

If you have the non intercooled version with the small inlet you cant do it. If you have the later modle it should have them. Fill in your sig, that would help

Well, I've seen the term bandied about and remain ignorant to it after 4 years...

What is a MWE slot, do I want one, what does it do and how do I get one?

An MWE slot is a slot in the compressor housing roughly even with the tips of the impeller. It allows excess pressure to recirculate out into the intake area of the turbo. This prevents surging - and it also makes a nice whistle.

If you want an MWE slot, you will need an HX-35, WH1C, or an HTT compressor kit.

About 1/3 down that page shows you an illustration of a MWE slot, or ported shroud compressor housing.

I just looked at one I have and It is below the tip of the large fins just above the small fins on the compressor wheel. It is cut all the way around and is .130" inch thick cut starting .935" from the front of the housing. Just at to botom of the ports on the out side. Hope that helps. I havent seen one that had the shroud but not the ports. Do you have the 4" inlet or the smaller one.

I just love how Garrett steals everything from Holset...

that sounds about right to me. the h1c's on IC'd trucks have the shroud with no port. the non-IC'd trucks have the 3" inlet.

on the first housing i cut, i hadn't actually seen any of this in real life. i made the cut at a right angle to the flow of air INTO the turbo. later, i found out that it should be cut as if it were a cone with the center/peak about an inch towards the exhaust side. does any of that make sense?

Thats right it should be cone shaped to the exhaust side.
