To much timing.

Is there a point where you have reached to much timing? I shoved my pump to the head a backed it of about an inch when I timed my truck, but it doesn't seem right. My old truck was timed to about a 1/2" from the head. This truck sounds like a 6.9L Ford, ok maybe that's a bit far, but it chatters unlike my old truck. Is it to much timing?

Could well be. What injectors are you running? HAve you put a dial indiactor on it to check for sure?

I'm running POD's for the time being, but like I said I had POD's in my old truck with much more timing than this one and it acted completely different. I remember reading that these injectors work well with lots of timing. Should I back the timing off? Is it going to hurt anything to run it this way? Seems to perform very well, it doesn't act funny just kind of clattery, kind of like a 24V.

Check the timing mark. How far is it there? The gear could be off a bit or your POD's maybe set a little too high.

When you have too much timing for good performance, the truck will surge at partial load. Is this a working truck or a play toy?

Both, I don't haul as much with this as I used to and it's the first 4X diesel so I've gotten into pulling. And it does do like you say and surge at partial load. So is it ok to keep it this way or do I back it down a bit? Thanks for the help guys.

i'm relatively new to all this diesel stuff but i can't figure out why it is so rare for anyone to know exactly how many degrees they are timed at. timing is so important. even the shops [most] don't have the tools to time the trucks they work on. it's bizarre.

I understand what you mean, but having worked on these trucks for years, I've always checked timing with a light and pulse adapter, and I've seen timing and boost settings all over the map even from the factory.
