Military tug rearends?
Are these dana 70s? Are they single wheel rears and what was the ratio, I think I have read 6.17 or 7.17. What is top speed with that gear and stock size tire, through a 727?

I think the only thing that rear would be useful in is a 2WD pullin truck with a 5000 rpm p pump motor in it. they did have pretty awesome lockers in them.
where would you find a 7.17 gear set at for a front dana 60??? nowhere id supposed

Is that axle capable of accepting a swap down to 4.10 or so? Doubtful, I suppose, thought I'd ask. The ring would be pretty small, as opposed to 3.07 having a large ring.

The pinion is the main change from ratio to ratio. Ring gear stays basically the same size. Thats why the carrier's are different from low ratio's to high. They move the ring gear closer or further from the pinion centerline. The thickness of the ring will vary some, I bet the 7.17 has a perty thick one.
Should be able to buy a 4.10 and numerically lower carrier and be good to go.
Just my .02$
