Might be buying a first gen. What issues should I look for?
Its been awhile since I've visited this site due to selling my 3rd gen Anyways Im looking at an 89 3/4 ton 4x4 standard cab with an auto with o/d. The seller mentioned some wires burnt in the harness and removed it. Not sure what harness waiting for a reply. But my question is what other issues should I should look for in these trucks? What mods can be done to get more power? And if the engine harness is whats burnt. Is there anyway to bypass it to see how the truck runs before buying it?

I saw the truck you are talking about on craigslist. Looks to be a very clean truck! As far as power goes check out the sticky, there is a lot of great info in there. what part of minnesota are you from?

I'm up in Princeton and as for the power mods I'm not too worried as I know there out there. Mostly just looking for info on what are some of the issues with this gen of truck

Seem Like most of the 1st gens I looked at had a lot of rust on the driverside floor board...but I did find one that didnt have that. All the others I looked at when you pulled back the carpet you could see right through to the ground. Its easier to just look underneith to check the floor boards.
2 differant trucks I looked at,the alt. didnt work. The one I bought had the same issue and was able to just set the crank sensor tighter(.030) and it started charging.
Happy hunting
