Metal Shavings in Trans Pan

Picked up my 47rh this weekend and found this in the pan:

The brown speck in the pan fell in there after having it pulled. The shavings must be aluminum, they don't stick to a magnet. There was no more on the other side of the filter or in the valve body anywhere.

The trans was rebuilt 25,000 miles ago. How concerned should i be about this? I would think it will only get worse

Same here. Every auto pan I pull has junk in it. Of course if you take it to a tranny shop they will say you need a full rebuild. I, of course am too cheap to let some ape that I dont know tear into my junk. Therefor, I throw shift kits in all my junk and let er rip. Only let me down once so far, and that was throwing a under rated trans behind the engine in my car. Shoulda known better.

How was it in the previous vehicle? Did you buy it from a wrecker? If so, they should have some sort of warranty on the parts they sell...

Probably coming from the converter. Some fine sparkles are normal but the bigger chunks usually means conveter. Did you flush the coolers both directions before installing the new trans? Lots of crap hides in there.

He just bought the trans from another member here. Going to install it in his 1st gen. Doesn't want to put a trans in thats on the verge of going.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the metal, that seems to be normal with aluminum plantaries.

The grey stuff is clutch material. Seems to be alot jammed in there, but I've seen worse.
Can't really tell if its from the converter or one of the clutches in the trans. Try to take a look up in the OD unit, if you see alot of clutch material up in there is probably the converter clutch.

Check the trans input shaft endplay before you take it apart. Shoot for .030" to .060". If its over .090" its excessive and needs to be addressed.

I looked up in the OD unit though the hole on the side with the linkages and there seemed to be no sign of anything in there. I lifted and turned the thing as much as i could to get the fluid out and no large (like what was in the pan) came out in the fluid.

I did look look and turn around the converter a little and now that i think of it there was some in there. I guess thats good news for me beings the converter is on it's way to goerend.

New converter, flush the coolers and run it. No way to tell without disassembly or driving.

kinda, i sent the cores in today to avoid the core charges. I am getting goerend's triple disk converter (forget the stall speeds lost the paper ) valve body with lock up in all forward gears, and a billet lever, strap and anchor. by the end of the summer i hope to have a billet input to take advantage of the lock up on all forward gears.

the billet input will let you shift without snapping the factory input. You can do it with the factory shaft but bad things may happen.
