You have an air bubble there. Loosen your sender fitting to burp the air out and it will read.

While on the subject, where are some better options to locate a mechanical sender ??

One reason for having the gauge in the first place is to alert one to a loss of coolant; but when the coolant level drops the least little bit, a sender in that location is left high and dry and just drops to ZERO, regardless of engine temp.

I would like to plumb mine into somewhere that is more apt to stay submerged.

You could replace the factory sender. It's kind of in an annoying spot to work though.

Could you put one on the 1/2" plug right next to the top thermostat housing?

That is where i put mine in, but i was asking about the same question. I have been wondering if the probe from the sending unit messes with the thermostat.

I also would like more info. I am going to be installing a isspro water temp but would also like the factory gauge to work. I just spent 70 bucks on a new sender for the factory gauge last summer. I , for the life of me can not remember where my old 89's used to be hooked up. It was twords the front of the engine somewhere. Just cant picture it.
