Master Cylinder Leak

I replaced the seal on the cover, but it still seems to be leaking out of the top. The back of the master cylinder is wet, from the cover down. What gives?

Have you put new pads or shoes in recently?

Have a good look at the surface along the top of the master cylinder reservoir that the lid is supposed to seal against. Instead of a nice smooth machined surface, it's quite common that that surface is rough, dented and pitted, and there's no way that the lid can seal against it. Especially on rebuilt master cylinders.

I had to bend the hold down wire on mine to make it fit tighter, no leaks since then.

Hmmmm...I am glad Randy posted this. I just put a whole new master cylinder and brake booster in my truck and the master cylinder was damp from fluid leaking out from under the cover. Even after being rebuilt, that is still pretty **** poor. It shouldn't leak.
