Seriously, document what you come up with. My doors aren't exactly like the one pictured, and there would be enough space to put in a much larger bolt plate, and/or weld a fishplate on the outside of it. Door's like new, and I had it rustproofed last fall, so I don't really expect to have to do anything to it, but my kids might some day.

when I have some time, I'm going to head to the boneyard again, and pick up a spare door.

With that, I'll remove that inner plate that the bolts thread into, and weld on a secondary shroud around it, and put it back. You can enlargen that plate by adding material all the way around it, just paying attention to the surrounding hills and valleys. If you leave slots were the tabs bend over the plate, you could return your "modified" plate back to the original spot, without affecting adjustment or fit as long as your newly modified plate had enough wiggle room around it's perimeter to re-align your door.

I want to pick up a new welder, so I can stop paying others to do what I want to do. Hopefully there's a class at the county college to learn the trade. Everyone I know who welds is just too busy to teach me.

I think given enough time you could form a piece of steel to cover a fairly larger amount of area than the current backing plate covers, and weld it in. But I am not that patient.

I have been busier than normal the last couple weeks and haven't gotten much truck work done. I did get one of my old doors cut up and here is a picture of the lower hinge area of the door frame on its own. Trimmed up a little more I think it will fit right over the other door inside with some bonding adhesive and double the strength.
