looking at a 92 4x4 std cab

Hi,

I am new to the diesel thing (currently have a 2001 and 1992 gas 4x4's)
looking for something better on fuel milage currently only get 13 in my gas 01

Looking at a 92 std cab stick 4x4 with 4:10 gears and 200,000 miles
The truck has a few issues
leaks around the valve covers (unsure if it is that or injectors)
and exhaust pipe flange broke off the turbo
and needs tires
paint is faded
body is solid little surface rust
interior is work truck fair
1 owner with all service records and recent transmission gone thru not sure what was changed

The guy is asking 5500
is this sound right

And is this something that would be good on fuel or with the rising fuel prices should I look a 4cy mini 4x4

Thanks for any input,
Jim

Welcome to DTR, Jim! I wouldn't buy just for fuel economy. Regardless of what some other members will say, a 4x4 5 speed is an 18-20mpg truck and not much more. Very respectable for what it is, but when you consider diesel is 50 cents/gallon more than regular in many places, the margin gets narrow in a hurry. With the tires, expect to put about 1500 bucks into the truck to get it seaworthy. Maybe a bargaining point? If you really want a 1st gen ctd, the price is fair, but I'd offer in the neighborhood of 3600 and be happy to land at 4300.

Welcome and this is a great www here. My stock ctd gets around 17 mpg city/hwy. and around 19-20 hwy thats with 3.54 gears. 4.10 gears will get a little less. I agree with G1625S about the bottom line value of the truck. Good Luck

Talking

I paid 4k for mine and it has no real issues with less miles. I would say talk him down. It sounds nice though and You can never go wrong with a 1st gen CTD!

Fuel mileage on mine is average 19-21 empty. For a 360 ci motor in a 3/4 ton 4x4 thats not bad at all! But you have to decide. You want economy for driving a ton of miles get the mini but even a mini 4x4 won't get 30 mpg (especially with lift and tires), as for me, having a CTD is worth more to me. They are reliable, fuel efficient for the size/power, and super fun!!

"" Remember, choose wisely, where the true grail (1st, 2nd, 3rd gen CTD) will be bring eternal life, the false grail (power jokes, dura-craps, gassers, etc..) will bring certain death!! ""

Good Luck!
