Lets play the dyno game

Planning to dyno my truck this Saturday at the local diesel races. Dyno is being provided by Dans Diesel Performance and I'm not sure what type of dyno it will be.

I recently installed an Industrial Injection Performance pump, which is still set the way they shipped it to me. 1/8" timing bump, DAP 5x.014s, II Phatshaft 62 turbo making 42psi, Raptor 100 fuel pump with 1/2" lines making 15psi at idle and between 10-12psi wot.

Lets hear some guesses on what it'll make. My sig shows what it made a couple years ago with only stock pump mods and the same turbo. Truck definitely makes mphs in a hurry in 3rd-5th and depending on road surface can soon them in 3rd and bark the tires in 4th. I'm sure the 37's will hurt me some. They are heavy heavy heavy!

I'm hoping for 350ish but not trying to get my hopes up.

I was hoping for quite a bit more with my Giles VE compared to my first dyno numbers in my sig from my original pump. Unfortunately, I had made no improvements over my 263hp numbers. In fact, both hp and torque were lower, 259hp, IIRC. Turns out, the 5x.012s I was running at the time were holding mine back. When I switched to the 5x.013s I've got now, it made a world of difference by the seat-of-my-pants dyno..... for a short while.

I haven't had the chance to dyno mine with it as is, but something has happened and power has tapered-off it seems. Again, only by my seat-of-my-pants dyno, but I know I didn't get used to the power that soon. It seemed to develop a "knock/rattle" that, at first, sounded like a timing rattle. I verified timing with a dial indicator, and it was where Giles suggested I start with, 1.3mm. I called Giles to get his opinion. He suggested backing it off to 1.2mm and possibly shimming the advance piston to change the timing curve. I backed the timing down to 1.2mm but I didn't feel like playing around with shims to see if it was the timing coming on too early or not. Truthfully, I had kinda given up at that point.

Funnily enough, after changing the oil back in late February, the minor "knock/rattle" I began to hear a while before then, had completely disappeared. I didn't get my hopes up yet. After tallying some miles, the oil had broken down and the "knock/rattle" returned. I have a bad feeling that whatever this sound is coming from, is deep inside. I sure hope, by the time I can get around to tearing it apart, that it's not too late and there isn't too much damage to the internals.

I'll say this, don't have any expectations as there will be some limiting factor. Just let it rip and see what it'll do.

My stock injectors seemed to have been holding my turbo back. Comes in faster and harder now.

We well definitely see what happens. I'm not scared to let her rip one bit. I almost wonder if too much WOT for to long is what killed my last pump. When i installed the new ip i added a fp gauge and learned my lp was weak. Shortly before the pump let go i had the motor at wot for several minutes while crossing a wet field pulling 20,000#s

I'm gonna guess 350/750. It's hard to say exactly because of your tires, and not knowing what the timing is exactly, as well as not knowing what kind of dyno it is.

Should be able to hit 350hp if he lets you spend 10-20 minutes messing with the timing before making another pull.

What fuel pin?

Not sure about now but the older II pumps were 100% stock inside, just "calibrated" for more power, stock spring and pin.

My guess if a Dunbar, 345/703.

They told me the pump has a 3200 rpm spring, custom pin that they ground for it, and a couple other changes.

Last time i ran on the dyno my boost never came all the way up. It held at 35psi but i can hold 42psi on hills or pulling so i hope the weight of the tires help to load the turbo better.

That last run was with the 33s

I read some where putting weight in the bed helps load up the turbo to allow full spool up

And here i am thinking about taking some stuff out of my bed. Two full size spares, floor jack and a 700ish piece craftsman toolbox add some serious weight. Not yo mention a Yeti loaded with frosty refreshments.

Does any one know what percent of power is lost through the drive line when you dyno a auto truck?
