Leaky lift pump, I got a few questions.

Well my lift pump is leaking and its making a mess on the block. What is the part # for the gasket that goes between the LP and the block? Also is there the risk that my LP could go bad from this? I'm getting a little sick of smelling raw #2 everytime I step out of the truck and I want to clean this up.

Thanks
Lucas

What he said. If the gasket between the pump and the block was bad you'd only have an oil leak.

Based on your HP goal you ought to put the piston lift pump in at some point anyway. Part #'s are in the 1st gen FAQ.

Thanks for the help guys.

How much will the piston pump and all the odds and ends needed for it run me? I assume its a direct bolt on? Could this be the reason as to why my mileage went for crap lately?

Are there any special tools I need? I looked at it and its held on by a couple of bolts and a few lines are attached to it, shouldn't be too hard to swap out. When I do replace it, do I have to do anything special like bleeding fuel?

Thanks
Lucas

All the parts to do the piston pump add up to around $200. No special tools needed, it's a direct bolt-on. All you have to do is trim the foam insulation on the tappet cover so the fuel line will fit. A sharp utility knife will deal with that. You can see pics of the install in my gallery.

A stock replacement (not genuine Cummins) can be had for a little under $40 online if money is tight right now.

You should crack open the bleeder screw and pump the primer until you see fuel. Close the bleeder, start the truck, and you are done.

If you are leaking fuel, that will not help the mileage any.

Thanks Dave,
I'm gonna go down to Cummins Western Canada (woohoo they're about 10 minutes from me ) and get the piston pump and all the the other stuff. I figure if I'm gonna do this I'll save myself the time and put in one that helps out with higher HP #s.

This is a stupid question but here goes: What exactly is the LP for? I'll guess that it draws fuel from the tank so the strain on the VE is lowered significantly? Sorry for the ignorance but I want to learn about this stuff

Where is the bleeder screw?
(I wish I had know yesterday before I cracked open the fuel line).

Above the fuel filter, there is a line going to the injection pump that has a banjo fitting with a small screw in it. 10mm hex, loosen it a few turns and thats it, it has a slot cut in it so you don't have to remove it.

Thumbs down Holy **** Cummins charges for parts!

Is it just me or are geniune Cummins parts expensive?
I just got off the phone with CWC (Cummins western Canada) and heres the prices I got from them:
Piston Lift pump- $269.21
Fuel Line- $50.20
Gasket- $4.01 each
Spacer- $18.39
Seals- $1.10 each
The grand total with GST (Canuck tax ) is a whopping....
$352.21!!

Just to get a stock replacement LP from them is $180+GST. Looks like I'll stick with a stock replacement for now since the money is a little tight.

How much is that in USD? They also could be giving you list price and not unit/your price out the door.

The price I quoted you was in USD. They sound a little high, but not totally out of line. I would not pay $180 CDN for a stock LP. Get an aftermarket one, they can be had for as little as $32 USD online.

edit - OK, after checking the exchange rate that's a rip-off! They are $100 USD high.

There price seems cheap compared to Cummins Eastern Canada LP which is over by me.
Piston Pump - $314.48
Fuel line - $61.22
Spacer - $22.51
The total price with gaskets and every thing with tax CND is $468.80
They were ripping me off big time with the conversion over to USD I couldn't believe the price difference. Id be better of driving to the states to buy one

I think I'll go with the cheap, aftermarket LP, until I can afford the fancy piston style. Dave which brands do you recommend from the aftermarket? I read on here about the one from NAPA being recalled due to leakage. I'm sure there are others out there that are just as good as the Cummins stocker.
