King pins

Hey all, doing some routine checks and I took a pry bar... notice there was some play in the lower king/bearings. Is this normal? The play is almost a 1/2 inch which I can't remember if this is okay or not. There is no wear on the tires and everything seems to ride well.

Maybe time to just do both sides and be done with it. I do need to fix a u-join anyways.

It is a very stout system and there should be no play in there. It is a doable job, here is my thread in the sticky:

On the other hand, if there is no death wobble, maybe it can wait...Mark

When I did my kingpins, I was able to borrow a 4X torque multiplier from work. Though it can be done without one, it sure makes replacing the upper kingpins a breeze. 600-700ft.lb. IIRC.
I agree that there should be no play. Certainly not 1/2"!

That's what I was wondering.

I was thinking there was some up & down but nowhere else? But maybe not 1/2".

When you pry up and down you are working against that spring at the top, which is supposed to keep that lower bearing seated in the race when the axle is unloaded. So I would expect to see some movement, though half an inch seems excessive.

If you try to shake the wheel at 12 and 6 when its off the ground do you have excessive movement?

There isn't much movement when I shake the wheel at 12 and 6. Yeah I was prying up and down, just seems very loose for some reason. I bought the kits and I will follow Marks thread. I have a 8ft torque wrench but I don't want to use it to bust the kings.. probably mess up the torque specs.

I did take the top off the upper king pin and was able to put the cap back on by hand, I'm thinking that spring is worn, I don't remember doing that before, ha! I'm going to get everything and just get it done, the u joints were bad and just wobbling around in the spindle so hopefully I didn't destroy that trying to get up a nasty dirt hill.

Never had a death wobble, Maybe I shouldn't hehe.

A 3/4" breaker bar with a 7/8" allen socket and a 6 foot piece of pipe work to knock that cone loose.

I think the spec is 500 to 600 ft/lbs for the top cone. I can check my FSM if you don't have one. I have actually done this job without replacing the top cone IF it does't show wear.

If you can put that top cap on without any extra pressure to start the bolts then the spring and/or the nylon cup is junk.

If you find that the lower king pin is bad, the Spicer number is 37299

Got it done! Wasn't a bad job at all, I actually enjoyed it. I have a dragon torch that hooks to a 20lb propane which helped remove the king ping. One king pins was gone.. literally pitted and gone which I removed by welding a bolt to it.

Other than that, replaced everything in the front end with USA stuff(Spicer/TIMKEN/National). Took out the chinese races and bearings and what a difference in feel. Besides getting kicked out of autozone and advanced auto for not wearing a face mask it was a good time. Ended up taking my business else where and they were happy to serve. I was happy to know they are not just a sell you a cheap part and see you later parts store. I thought long and hard about those two parts places and nothing has ever been good there for me. I'll be taking my business else where.

Crazy world out there, so much for land of the free.

Ok guys, let's tone down the rhetoric. Regardless of your opinion on the severity, let's show a little respect for the people that have died or suffered. I was a paramedic for 26 years and I watched too many people literally drown in their own bodily fluids. Specifically copd and congestive heart failure, both common illnesses. I don't care if it's just 1 or 1 million, it should all be treated with deference, humility and empathy. Disease knows no politics. TIA...Mark

Is there suppose to be an outer seal where the axle goes? When I took out the axle there wasn’t a seal on either side Fluid level is fine in my pumpkin.. just wonder of a way to keep water out if not.
