Jingle bells noise?

I developed a new intermittent noise on my 1992 W250 manual.

It sounds like fast jingle bells.

Power and economy have been unaffected as far as I can tell.

I have not found anything to make the noise happen other than it being rather random and it usually happens when the truck hits a sharp bump.

I can make it go away generally with a sharp brake stab or slowing down to about 40mph or less.

It doesn't seem to be speed related. Pitch and tone do not change with the speed of the truck or the speed of the motor as far as I can tell. It seems to do it only when the truck is moving, I have not yet had it happen with the truck being non-moving?

Anyone have any ideas?

yeah yeah....

I'm leaning toward maybe the vacuum pump? Or perhaps a vacuum leak? The sounds is kinda like a metallic whistle. I do have some vacuum related issues on the truck like a hard brake pedal sometimes. I guess I need to throw a T in and see what the vacuum gauge says....

does it make the sound when you press and hold the brake? If the booster is leaking it may make a whooshing or whistling sound when you press the brakes.

My 92 did the same thing, nothing related to nothing. Speed, braking, accelerating, nothing would make it come or go. After many trips underneath I found the heat shield on the exhaust loose. Fixed that and no more jingles. Good luck

my two wheel drive has strut rods with bushings that went away, leaving big washers to jangle around. very irritating.

Mine was doing something similar. It seemed to ring more if I drove the passenger side of the truck on higher ground than the left side. It did this for a few weeks then it quit just about the same time the oil leak started because the KDP exited halfway out through the timing cover. The timing gear set is hardened steel and the KDP was rubbing on the gear teeth. Road bumps and elevating the right side of the truck permitted the pin to shift back into contacting the timing gear. Now, lets hope it's something else.

Mine was making a type of ringing noise too.... and nothing was related to nothing too... thought it may have been a bearing in the tranny, thats what it sounded like to me. Since ive redone my exhaust, Rip Rook TBE to 5" MBRP mitres, put several hundred miles on it and havent heard it since. Must have been exhaust related.

FOUND IT!

It was the passenger side inner brake pad. It was worn down just barely to the wear indicators. These where just slightly rubbing on the rotor when the pressure released on the caliper residual valve. When you applied the brakes it would leave enough pressure in the system to keep everything quiet...but hit a big bump or if the pressure came down again the pad would start to lightly graze the rotor along with its indicators......

Replaced the pads in front, checked the rotors, all is well and quiet.
