Question IP Timing for Performance, Crank Seal Install Too

Slowest mechanic in the South...........ME!

I am going to dive under the hood again on Saturday. When I got my IP back from THD the shaft was locked 1 tooth advanced. I was thinking I wanted to do like that anyways. It's installed like that right now. Timing cover is on without a gasket to keep it dry. Going to button it up this weekend for sure/

I am slowly building to be 400-450. I have all the parts to do it. I am not wanting to do a timing plate. (mixed results on that) I don't want to be blowing coal either.

What have you done in this area?

Also have a Mahle crank seal with repair sleeve. From what I understand you can install the repair sleeve even if it doesn't need it.

My pump is advanced to the head, so I should probably bump it a tooth also, but my timing is perfect just the way it is.
I advance the pump unit I hear popping under acceleration, then back it off until it stops. It will still pop if I rev it in neutral before it is warmed up, but otherwise, perfect.

Gas motors popping with acceleration means lean mixture. Not sure what it means with our deeZul beasties. I would be worried about a backfire blowing out the intercooler.

Advice on a different forum was too much advance could cause an excess in cylinder pressure and possible blown head gasket.

Back in my college days I worked for Sun Oil pipeline for a summer job. Stationary diesels at the Wynnewood, OK pump station. When the ALCO was running hot in the 100*+ heat it would "bark" there was a spring loaded pop-off plate on the end of the intake. It would clank and a puff of black smoke would come out of the stack. It happened to me once when I was in the engine room. I about crapped my pants getting out of there! They told up not to hang out there when they were running. Get in check the oil etc and get out. We had a sprinkler system on the radiators to add extra cooling.

I'm talking very mild pops, not big banks, nothing causing damage.

In many cases where one has the IP pushed fully to the head, advancing one tooth at the gears allows one to pull the IP well away from the head so as to allow better access to stuff back there (while still being advanced).

That is an excellent point, and also allows more airflow for better cooling.
