Inspecting Injectors

I'm thinking about pulling an injector and visually inspecting it. Which injector should I pull, and what should I look for? Also, if I pull one would I have to bleed the whole system? Does a visual inspection do any good?

I believe the injectors on my truck are stock and have 195K miles on them. My next big step is to buy some better ones that do not billow out a bunch of smoke, but deliver more or better performance.

Anybody have any tips?

Hope to hear from pro injector inspectors!

Happy New Year!

Tom

Why do you want to inspect the injectors? Is it running poorly?

There's not much to see, the holes are so tiny you will need a magnifying glass to see them at all unless you're a young pup.

If you were to pull just one (or three of them), the truck would restart no problem. You might have to bleed that cylinder to get it firing again.

Pick one that's easy to reach.

I was told that some injectors get crystallized buildup or jelled at the ends? I was under the impression that injectors slowly go out after time, Am I wrong?

My truck doesn’t run poorly, Just would like to see what the ends look like and always willing to try to get my truck running to the best of its ability with less wear and strain on everything.

Also, with my set up, with Stage IV and 16 cm my boost maxes out near 20, and pyro at around 850-900 makes me wonder if more fuel is needed to get me pulling my trailer up gradual inclines above 50mph. I don’t think I should be mashing my foot down so much to achieve this speed. I'm going through everything.

Thank you for your input.

Sounds like your injectors and/or pump could be getting tired or at least the injectors need a clean and reset. With a stage4 and 16cm housing, you should be seeing the mid to upper 20s at least. Did you add any fuel when you did the turbo upgrades? If not, that is about right. Stock boost is in the mid to upper teens for intercooled.

I'm not sure how big your trailer is, but I pulled a 10K trailer up and down I-25 @70+ in CO all summer in 2000 with a stock 92 auto.

Yeah, it sounds like it could stand to be turned up some more.

While you're checking things over don't forget these common problems:

Misadjusted or worn throttle linkage. Make sure the throttle arm on the pump hits the high speed screw when the accelerator is floored.

Pull out the AFC cone and make sure the fuel pin pops out when the throttle lever is moved to WOT (engine off, of course).
