Injector pump

Last week my 1990 cummins started surging real bad. So we did the cheap stuff first, we changed the fuel filter, air filter and changed the oil. None of that worked. Finally took it to the shop and they said it was the injector pump. So we are getting it rebuild for 800 bucks they said a new bolt on one would cost 1,500. Have any of yall had injector pump problems? And should i get them to go ahead turn it up while it there?

It only takes 1-2 hours and is free to turn up yourself so why pay them to do it. For the injector pump, you can buy rebuilt ones for around $575 or a higher HP Bully Dog pump for $1500. My pump needs rebuilt soon. I'm going to try replacing the seals and gaskets myself first.
