industrial injection performance calibrated ve pump
Still waiting to hear back from the pump shop about my pump but I'm sure they are going to say it's toast. They already quoted me 1100 for a rebuild and 1600 if the core is bad. I've found where Industrial Injection offers a performance calibrated pump that supposedly be tweaked and tuned by them and according to the guy i talked to it also has a custom ground fuel pin specifically for their pump and the 3200 spring. The price is a sight better than the stock rebuild my local shop quoted me.
Has anyone tried one of these and can verify if it's worth the price or not. They also offer a bone stock one for about 200 less. Also curious about that fuel pin. The guy i was talking with also said he wouldn't run this pump with stock injectors and recommended 5 x.012 at minimum.

This probably isn't the response you're looking for but, if you were close to willing to pay $1100-$1600, I'd go talk to Giles at Performance Diesel Injection in Canada. He'll build you a mild pump for $1400 that will push around 250cc's. For $1900, he'll build you a *****-out pump like mine pushing 263cc's. He generally uses a 4,200 governor spring but is more than happy to put whichever spring you want in it.

I'm really not looking to go that wild. The II pump is only about 900 and i think would be about as much as I need. My main concern is keeping the truck where i can tow reliably. I don't pull as much as some of you but probably pull more than several. I'm hooked to a trailer at least once a month and a short trip for me would be 130 miles one way. During the summer I'm hooked to my boat if I'm off. I don't want to buy to big a pump and injectors then be stuck fighting egts. Would really love to devote the truck to non stop go fast parts but unfortunately i can't.
Not to mention the wife was none to thrilled with this expense after replacing the head gasket, oil cooler and some other odds and ends just two weeks ago.

You send him a pump, he rebuilds it and replaces any parts, external or internal, that he feels necessary for pump longevity and reliability. He does great work and knows these pumps very well. He has a custom fuel pin made for the pumps as well as excellent AFC tuning to complement the fueling. And, of course, it's calibrated and benched. Turn around time is about 1 week once he receives the pump. In fact, he overnighted my pump back to me. I was not expecting that! He's also a very cool guy to talk to and has answers to any questions you have. Unfortunately, he can't answer all of them. Something about trade secrets .

I will give him a call as soon as i hear from the pump place here about what all needs replacing so i can get an accurate estimate from him on it. Maybe i can fit it into my budget.

The head broke off the shaft and is stuck in the cam plate. The rest of the shaft is locked up in the head. When it happened it broke 3 of the 4 bolts that hold the head to the pump.

By toast i mean I'll probably have to eat a core charge. I didn't remove the screw from the head and try to push the shaft out but it's stuck in there good. The shop it's at now was going to try and remove it and see if the heads salvageable.

At this point, you might just try finding a good core to send to whomever you decide to have build it. I bought a "low mileage" pump (113K) for $400. So really, I've got $2500 total in mine. The bill from Giles came to $2,015. It probably would've been a little lower had the pump not needed a new driveshaft. Internally it was fine but Giles didn't like a couple of threads on the snout that were pretty worn. The rest of the internals looked great according to Giles.
When I received the pump from the guy I bought it from, the side of the box had a puncture in it which looked as though the driveshaft had gone through it. I'm always concerned about packages that contain delicate, or in this case expensive, items no matter the carrier. Especially if the seller doesn't know how to package things of that nature very well.

That's why I was considering a II pump. The place i found it at only charges 300 for the core. So if they don't give me the core back I'm only out 300. After talking to then and Jon i think I may go with their stock pump, add the 3200 spring myself and put my Denny T in it and tune it myself then run the 5x12s. By talking to them it doesn't really have any internal mods.

You might consider calling Scheid Diesel in Terre Haute (800) 669-1593. Their stock rebuild isn't as high as their 'hot' pump they have on their site. Core is $300.
