If you want to increase your MPG!

Put a new tranny in! 600 mile road trip this last weekend and my mileage increased 4 MPG! went from 17-20 to 20s and up! Maybe the lower stall speed TC or new internals or both, who knows, but NOTHING ELSE was changed and major increase

Off the subject, but what part of "Mon" are you talking about with your location? (I'm another transplant)

Does your truck have a lockup torque converter? I've heard on the interweb (but have never seen) that some late 93s had lockup. If not what torque converter did you install?

I'm going to be doing a lockup conversion on the cheap to my 518 here in a couple weeks. The cost of a 47RH either rebuilt or used is just too expensive for what I want to do so we'll see how it works out. Stay tuned, I'll start a new thread with plenty of pics.

I didn't do a lockup (I thought you couldn't on the diesels). But put in a precision with a lower stall speed, so it feels MUCH closer to a lockup. So far so good.

The conversion portion to the truck has been pretty well documented here and on other forums but what I'm going to do is convert the non lockup trans to a lockup. You would still have to do the conversion to the truck because it moves the trans back about 1.125".

I'm just going to put out the steps to convert the trans cheaply with only 2 or 3 parts, except of course for the converter, as an alternative to the very expensive 47RH. My goal is to get as close to 30 MPG as I can just driving normally.

Good luck with yours I'm glad that worked out for you.

When I had my transmission rebuilt with a custom low stall converter, I only got another mile per gallon. 17-19mpg vs 16-18.

I wasn't sure if I was seeing things at first. Typically it's a good day when I get 128 miles at the 3/4 full tank mark and it went over 170. Stopped to top it off and over 20MPG. Checked it again on the way home and same thing! I feel like I'm driving a Prius or something

Unless it's untaxed, then it's red.

My converter made about a 2-3 mpg improvement. It really shoes how sloppy the factory converters were

Wait till you have a converter go real bad. When I first got my truck it would run right at 20 MPG. When I dropped the auto out 13 years later it was getting 13 MPG.

With the G56 installed I went back up to solid 19 MPG.

What stall speed did you go with and where did you get it?

Hey KRB,
It's a precision and the stall speed is 1700-2000 (according to tech). On THAT note, I now seem to have the issue described here: https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...t=Early+shifts where the 2-3 shift is too early and not adjustable with the TV cable. Tried to have the tech make adjustment and after 1 wk delay and a hearty "She's all set!" I discovered they didn't do a thing except jiggle the TV adjustment . Sooooo this "green spring" that's referred to (or the drilling out of the hole on the plunger) seems to solve the issue? I DO NOT want to take it back to Joey big talker and would like to tackle it on my next fluid change. Does anyone have pics or more info on this Transgo early shift modification?

Thanks in advance

For my money I would get either the Superior or Sonnax shift correction kit. I did a TransGo in my 48RE and it never shifted right. So after going back into it 3 times I ended up taking it back out. I'm no novice either, I've been a trans tech for 39 years.

Thanks Angry. That's the kind of feedback I'm looking for. Don't want to #$$# around with this thing all summer! I'll look into it.
