Post Idling?

How much diesel fuel does our engine really use when we let it idle for about 10 to 15 minuets? Although I am paying almost $4.00 per gallon is it that significant to shut it off versus how much it will cost to replace the starter and ignition switch from continually restarting it?
I thought at an idle the engine was only using enough fuel to sustain its operation.
I was just wondering.

The standard rule of thumb is one gallon per hour at idle.
