i need your help to identify the rearend under my 91

the story behind the fact that i don't know what it is:

previous owner had a different rearend put in the truck because of an R&P failure. instead of just getting the gears swapped out, he replaced the whole **** thing. he says it's out of a GM 3500 dually. i'm just not quite so sure because of how easily it appears that everything bolts up. he also claims to have had the rear half of the two piece driveshaft modified to fit. i've got pictures to do all my talking as i'm very new to this truck

any input would be extremely helpful. i do know that there is roughly 54-54.5" backing plate to backing plate. i'm almost positive that this truck has a 4.10 gear in it, but i will pull the cover and divide ring gear teeth by pinion gear teeth at a later date when i have the time to make sure i have all the gear dope.

if it's a posi rear, what posi-additives should i run? also, what weight gear oil should i run in these big rears? i'm used to a little 7.5" gm 10 bolt that requires 80W.

I'm no expert but it looks like a GM 14 bolt to me

That would be a GM corp 14bolt. I even compared it to our Chevys.

I may need to get some measurements from you in the future, as I plan to swap one of those into my truck. Great axle!

It is an excellent axle that is cheap and plentiful. Very easy to work on due to the bolt on pinion carrier.

Yup, that's a 14 bolt. I just did wheel bearings/seals/shoes/cylinders/lines and hardware on a 98 2500 Chevy yesterday. Pretty stout looking axle. It has the inboard drum like our old D70's so the whole mess has to come off to service the brakes...but it looks like you need some seals anyway

I seriously doubt it is from a dually. Maybe a 1ton, but the hub doesnt stick out far enough, and the lug bolts are too short.

What makes the 14 bolt better than the D70? Or is it just the "cheap and plentiful"?

Bigger ring gear. They are super stout, and if you look around you can find them with 3.42 gears.

Matt those are some great pics! :-) Hope you can find the gearset you need, that sure would be a keeper axle if I had it!(and turned out to be a dually after all) ;-) Also not too sure about the 'cheap' or 'plentiful' part either - at least around KC. I've only come across one, and it was NOT cheap!(like $500)
PS
Better be careful if you ever use that spare tire slung under there; it's already showing a fair amount of ozone/weather-check/age in the sidewall. Just don't go too far/fast with it, ok? Good luck w/axle work!!

Yepers it's a 14 bolt 10.5 inch ring gear. It's sought after by the 4x4 crowd for the full floating axels and it's hugeness. I have one in my 73 motorhome that I'm swapping the 454 out of for a CTD. I plan to use the 14 10.5 rear end in the swap. Here's a link about them that I found useful, http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...ble/index.html

The 10.5 came most commonly with 456 gears (which is what I have).
Hope that helps
Eric

92DuallyCTD- $500 IS cheap for a 1 ton axle of any sort, if it is in drivable shape. Have you seen the price of Dana80s? Good luck finding one for under $800. I stumbled onto my 80 for $500, and I went to NE to get it.

Oh yeah, I hear ya...just didn't want anyone to expect a mention of 'cheap' to be thinking in the $100-200 range, right? Everything is relative - but $500 spent for ANYTHING isn't cheap for the masses in general. Ah well, these trucks surely represent the 'you wanna play, you gotta pay' adage!! I always try to justify costs with: 'you only get what you pay for'. Hey, we COULD all pay less...and have Ferd's!! :-)

Sounds good D
Its interesting seeing the differences between the dana 70 and the chev axel

I wonder if the yolks are interchangeable........

Seems we're hijacking this thread though.....
