I got the tranny blues.

I got the tranny blues.
I think my tranny is out 4 lunch. When cold it shifts right into gear without a problem, but will only hit OD once in a great while. After it warms up when you go to put it in drive, you have to rev the truck before it will slam into gear. I have check the tps and it seems to be working ok. also made sure the adjustment on the TV cable was in spec. Any opinions or somthing I missed before calling aamco?

What does your Tranny fluid look and smell like?...is it slipping once it's in gear?

But I think you are next in line for a trans upgrade...which can be a good thing ;D

Re:I got the tranny blues.
The tranny fluid appears ok, nice and red. Slipping? I dont think so. It seems to rev a bit if you take your foot off the pedal then step back on it. Its like the torque converter has to spool up before you start going. Also after its warmed up, if you put a load on the tranny like climbing a steep hill it will make a shudder and loud groaning noise. To the point of going 5 mph up a hill to keep it from making the noises. I would like to get a big name tranny, but just cant afford the prices. Aamco is offering a complete rebuild for 1300 bucks. I figured with a solid rebuild and a decent converter I might be ok for awhile. Or is just wishful thinking?

Re:I got the tranny blues.
If you are going to leave your truck stock getting the trany you are talking about should be fine.( as long as they know how to set up a diesel trans) If you do not do a lot of hard launches or tow heavy all the time it should last awile.

With your trans out take a look at your flex plate. I am wondering if that might be part of your problem. Your converter might be bad too. I also wonder if the pump in the trans is moving tranny fluid like it should. I am sure someone else will chime in with something to say. Good luck.

Re:I got the tranny blues.
I am wondering how the flex plate can have any effect on this, can you explain further? Also, if the truck sits in park or nuetral idleing for 10-15 minuts, its starts leaking near the front tranny seal area. There is a tranny at the local wrecking yard for sale for 300 bucks with less than 50,000 on it. But when they were pulling the motor out of the truck they missed a bell housing bolt and broke off the top tranny mounting hole on the bell housing. would this be a major issue or should I jump on the deal? I dont do any major towing, at most its just my Jeep on a car trailer when I go 4 wheeling.

Rayzor, just to let you know, a CORE a518 goes for $1000.00 in my neck of the woods.
If you can pick one up for less than $300 with low miles like that you can have it welded and still come out ahead. And if it broke on the top it won't be that big of a deal anyway.
And even though I cannot see and hear your tranny (so this is just a educated guess) I would say your rear clutch pack is gone.

Dave

I also have an A518 tranny and mine starting leaking at 183,000 miles and I thought it was a front seal, so I took it in and found out that the OD was shot and it was building up pressure and blowing the oil out the breather. It worked fine but I guess it was on the verge of quitting. Anyway I had them rebuild it. I had 3 options 1. Standard for $1,600.00 which the parts were better than OEM. 2. Heavy duty with a shift kit, $2,400.00. 3. Heavy duty with a shift kit, 4 gear OD instead of the 3 gear and a high stall converter. $2,600.00. This is what yours sounds like to me.
